The Lumbardhi river through Prizren at dusk, minaret and Sharr ridge behind
Prizren · Pristina · the Rugova valleys

Kosovo is small. Plan it that way.

Prizren to Pristina is eighty-five kilometres and about an hour and a quarter of motorway. That is short enough to see both properly, and short enough to get the order wrong. Here is what each day actually buys you.

Four places, one small country

Where a Kosovo trip actually goes.

Almost everything bookable here starts in one of four places: the Ottoman lanes of Prizren, the concrete-and-cafe capital, the mountain road west out of Peja, or a loop that strings the lot together.

Cross-border day trips dominate, because for years the easiest way into Kosovo was a coach from Tirana or Skopje. They still run, and they are still the cheapest way to see two cities in a day.

Prizren

Prizren rewards a night, not an afternoon.

The Sinan Pasha mosque, the stone bridge and the hammam sit within four hundred metres of each other, so the walking part is over quickly. What takes time is the climb to Kalaja fortress for the rooftops, and the hours afterwards on Shadervan square when the light goes amber.

Pristina

Pristina is stranger and better than its reputation.

The National Library wears ninety-nine domes and a metal net, and the city is fond of arguing about it. Ten kilometres south, Gracanica monastery has been standing quietly since the fourteenth century. Half an hour the other way, the bear sanctuary keeps the animals that used to sit outside restaurants.

West of both cities

The mountains start an hour past the last roundabout.

Peja & Rugova trips →

Rugova gorge cuts west out of Peja towards the Montenegrin border: via ferrata bolted into the limestone, a canyon bridge, and the Bjeshket e Nemuna beyond. South, the Sharr range does the same job with softer edges and longer meadows.

What Kosovo charges

A day in Kosovo, by price.

Kosovo is cheap by Balkan standards and very cheap by European ones. The gap between bands is mostly transport: a shared coach seat, a car with a driver, or the whole car to yourself.

8 tours

Walking tours of Prizren and Pristina, and the airport run. Two or three hours, a local guide, no vehicle to pay for.

Three ways to spend the day

The days that make a Kosovo trip.

A country this size does not need a fortnight. It needs three good decisions: what to walk, what to drive to, and how much history you want with it.

Motorway and back

Both Cities In A Run

The classic Kosovo day starts in Pristina, takes the motorway southwest, and gives Prizren the afternoon, when the fortress is worth the climb and the square fills up. Coaches for it leave from Skopje and Tirana as well as from Pristina itself, which is why the price ranges so widely: you are mostly paying for how far the bus came.

The UNESCO Monasteries

Gracanica sits ten kilometres from the capital, Decani about ninety minutes west, and the Patriarchate at Peja just past it. All three are UNESCO-listed, all three are working monasteries, and all three ask for covered shoulders and knees. Photography rules vary by church, so ask at the gate rather than inside.

Two hours on foot

The City Walk

Both cities are walkable to the point of being small. In Pristina the route runs from the NEWBORN letters past the Clinton statue to the bazaar; in Prizren it barely leaves the river. A guide is worth it here less for the distance than for the last thirty years of the story, which no plaque explains well.
